15 years before Bernard Madoff, there was Sergey Mavrodi (Sergey MAMONTOV – in the film) and his MMM: a financial pyramid which at its peak in summer of 1994 involved more than 15 million investors from all over Russia. Mavrodi was in command of 50 billion dollars. There was not enough time or manpower to count cash: it was measured approximately, in carloads. At the height of his power, Mavrodi had the support of almost half the population of Russia. His next goals were the toppling of the government and the international expansion of his business.
